My books
Someone asked me ‘How many books on photography can a man do?’ The answer is 'One’. The problem
is that it’s neither possible nor right to put it all down at once. Knowledge and information about a subject
so young changes rapidly: only arrogant fools think there is anything definitive to say. So the work gets
spread over many volumes. Look at my books in the round and you see someone who mutters around
trying to understand, trying to teach some of what he knows, and someone whose ideas flutter and
stumble about in constant exploration.
Each volume responds to a commission, reaches to a different reader and brings in my latest experience,
new knowledge and understanding, corrects the infelicities of previous books. My personal favourite is ‘Tao
of Photography’ – there is more of me than in any of the others. ‘Advanced Photography’ is technically
dense, and hints at much of my latest thinking. And ‘Digital Photographer’s Handbook’ has a good deal of
many things; it’s a book I’m very proud of - particularly as it has bucked the trend and is a steady seller,
topping
300,000 copies in over a dozen different languages.
