Books

Someone asked me ‘How many books on photography can a man do?’ The answer is ‘One‘. The problem is that it is neither possible nor very clever to put it all down at once. It is obvious that understanding and information about a subject so young as digital photography changes rapidly: only fools and people who know everything will think there is anything definitive to say. So the work must be spread over many volumes. Look at my books in the round and you see someone who mutters around trying to understand, trying to teach some of what he knows, and someone whose ideas flutter and stumble about in constant exploration. More, the book concepts evolve as readers demand more, some having mastered the practical basics are now asking questions about emotion and feeling and meaning in photography. The latest book 'The Complete Photographer' is my response to that. The next book, fast coming together, is (provisionally titled) 'Photography: the Essential Introduction' which I've aimed at today's tech-literate, camera-toting reader who wants to make better photographs.

The Complete Photographer

meets the many requests I’ve received to make a photo book about ideas, inspiration, style, visual flair. Enjoy!

SCENE CITY: Singapore

8-part TV series for CNA (Channel News Asia): one episode won an award at 2010 New York Film and TV festival!. Woo woo wooo!!   In the programmes I explore Singapore with guest photographers to share tips and experience. A great way to learn a bit of photography and explore Singapore - many parts unknown to even Singaporeans - at the same time.

How to Photograph Absolutely Everything

How to Photograph Everything is a truly fun-filled picture book. It is bursting with pictures, some of them of yours truly. The idea was to give readers the sense they were watching me at work (well, messing about looking for shots). But the important ones are for the sheer exuberant fun of picture-making. And because essentially practical photography can be boiled down to a dozen or so pieces of advice, once you get the idea you really can photograph absolutely everything. Well, you might need special gear or access for galaxies, ghosts and auras. But we cover some of those too! (Available in hardback and paperback.)

Digital Photographer's Handbook

Digital Photographer's Handbook hit the spot. It went into reprint even before publication day. And it has sold steadily and consistently all round the world. Amazingly for a book on such a young subject, it is now in its fourth edition. How did I manage that? Because I cunningly aboided being  specific to software when describing techniques. I also regularly over-estimated on figures such as hard-disk capacities, so by the time the book came out, the figures were correct. Still, I put into the core a great deal of my experience and knowledge. We've started working on a complete overhaul of the book.

Fundamentals of Modern Photography

Fundamentals of Modern Photography (or plain 'Fundamentals of Photography' in USA) aims to integrate fully film with digital. You may think film is irrelevant; you may be wrong. Covering everything from film development to making the best of your lens and how to shoot portraits, this book crams a great deal into its 352 pages.  Every page is hard-working, which does make reading the book quite hard work too. This is a one-stop book on photography combining photo-technique with theory and lots of practical advice that's like a big department store: you have to take your time to be sure to find everything.

Digital Photography Masterclass

Digital Photography Masterclass was conceived as a course in photography. We wanted to give readers the idea that they were learning directly from me, as if on a workshop. So chapters started with an introduction to the topic, peppered with analyses of how pictures work. This was followed by assignments and, best of all, examples of work from amateurs who actually did the assignments and sent them for review. (Thank you to all of you who took part!) Rounding off with interviews with star photographers, it's a book with very rich variety of content.

Advanced Digital Photography

This book was originally proposed by my publishers in Germany, Augustus. Of course
I was eager to take it up, and would have liked to take the ‘advanced’ bit even further and deeper into the subject. But had to be written to be useful even to those who are relatively inexperienced. Indeed, because I discuss
general principles and concepts: these may appear rather basic, but the treatment is not. You will get more from
it if you are advanced in digital photography but only because you’d have more practical experience. If you want
to go a little deeper into the fabric of digital photography without the science and image processing maths, this is
the book for you. Even now, It is also peppered with little hints and tweaks for making life better and easier.

Tao of Photography

You either love or hate this book, it seems. As a project it was the easiest ever: from editors to salesmen and managers, everyone loved the idea of rewriting photography in terms of Taoism (Daoism). Once the idea had been presented to book fairs it was decided to publish very quickly. Start to finish the book took only a few months to pull together.
